Teen Therapy in Simi Valley

We work with your teen to envision a better way of life

You’ve noticed your teenager drifting through life.

For the longest time you’ve watched your teen try to figure out their place in the world, and you long for them to feel understood, safe, and valued.

But you are seriously concerned that they are lost and aimless.

You know you need guidance on how to best help your teenager. Your family and your teen need support and positive direction, and they need to find some meaning and purpose soon. But, you’re just not sure how to help.

You long to remember the good times. When your baby would crawl into your lap, tell you about their life, and you would dream together. But ever since they entered adolescence, your teenager is struggling. It’s as if school, social relationships, and family interactions are harder than they need to be. Life can be hard to navigate at any age, but for a teenager, it can be especially overwhelming. You get this. But you’re starting to wonder if your teen will ever feel connected and accepted for who they are.

Lately, you feel like help is out of reach.

You’ve worked hard to help your teen gain traction and to feel motivated and purposeful.

But no matter what you do they still end up in their room on whatever social media app (Is your teen too focused on social media?) or streaming platform they feel is more important than actually engaging with their life.

A lot of the time you feel alone in this fight for your teen’s happiness and success.

You would love support and answers. And, you would love a game plan and resources. You truly want to help your teen develop and aim for their goals. But you have no idea where to start or how to make this happen. You never imagined your teen would be withdrawn from life. And you certainly didn’t expect you’d feel so frustrated.

The Teen Counseling Process

Therapy for teenagers is intended to help them learn to identify what is going on inside their minds, bodies, and emotions. We work with your teen to envision a better way of life, one that they want to strive for, and we help them to gain the skills and tools needed to best get there.
Families are essential to this process. As parents grow in their confidence to lead and create lasting change in their teens’ lives, teenagers also grow in their ability to self-regulate and go for their goals. We incorporate Cognitive-Behavioral and self-exploration techniques to help all of you gain tools that can help your teen overcome what’s holding them back.
We collaborate with you for a minimum of 12 weekly 50- minute sessions to look at the various parts of your teen’s world, from home life to parenting and individual concerns. Together, we will work to get your teen the momentum they need to turn their life in the right direction and find relief for themselves and your family.

Here’s what to expect:

WEEK ONE: Intake

During this initial session, you as the parent will meet with your teen’s therapist. The two of you will have the opportunity to work together to begin to understand what is really going on in their world. Your therapist will ask individually-directed questions to gain a true understanding of your teen’s and family’s unique situation. And, together you will start to develop a plan for your time that will help your teen establish and reach their goals.

WEEK TWO and Beyond: Adolescent Counseling

Because the success of teenage counseling often depends on them having a safe and private place to process their stressors, much of the information shared in teen-only sessions may need to be kept confidential. But this does not mean that the family will not be an important part of the process.

Often, parents will be brought in either individually or with the teen to participate in therapy. Parents are an important part of providing the home environment and structure that supports the work done in session. So, the therapist will customize the dynamics of who is in each session based on the unique needs of your teen and family.

Each session is designed to help your teen dive deep into the underlying causes of their troublesome feelings. Together, your teen and your therapist will identify thinking patterns that may be making their lives harder. They will also spend time exploring their life in all areas from school to home to their emotional and mental world so they can become more aware of their values and more confident in who they are in the world.

You and your therapist will work together to help your teen identify and change their negative thoughts and begin to believe in themselves so they feel more in control and able to take more positive actions to improve all facets of their lives.

TERMINATION: 1-2 Final Sessions

In your teen’s final sessions, your therapist will review the goals to ensure you are both satisfied with the counseling experience and that the work they have done together has met your expectations. You, your teen, and your therapist will also outline a plan going forward so that they are able to retain what you have worked on together and to implement all that has been learned inside of session in the outside world.

Who Benefits Most from Adolescent Counseling

We Treat Teen Depression, Anxiety, Self Esteem, and More

Therapy for adolescents is best for those who are struggling to find themselves and grow into the person they are meant to be.

All young people experience moments when they feel like withdrawing or acting out which is all part of being a normal teenager. But when this becomes more of a regular state of being, it is a sign your teen needs help.

Your teen will benefit from Adolescent Counseling if:
^
They have difficulty recognizing their own value
^
They feel misunderstood, angry, or defeated
^
They are experiencing anxiety or overwhelmed by their emotions
^

They are withdrawn and have stopped engaging with the people or things they used to enjoy

^

They are struggling with social and/or school and family interactions

There are certain situations where your teen and family might not be ready for counseling sessions with Simi Psychological Group.

These situations include, but are not limited to:
^
Teens who are not willing to participate in the process
^
Those who cannot get past their own defensiveness and learn to really listen
^
Current instances of domestic violence
^
Those who are not both willing to commit to doing the work of therapy
^
Parents who want the therapist to do all the work

What Does Teen Therapy Cost?

Teen Counseling is a fee for service program, and we accept all major forms of payment. The session fees depend upon the clinician you and your family choose to see for treatment. Please contact us directly for our individual fees.

Due to our desire to make sure you maintain maximum privacy and wanting to provide you with the highest level of care possible without constraints from managed care, we are out-of-network providers. This means we do not accept reimbursement directly from insurance.

However, the good news is that your health insurance may reimburse you for a portion of the fee. PPO insurances typically reimburse around 50%. Unfortunately, HMO, Medi-Cal, and Medicare insurances do not reimburse as they require that you see someone on their panel. We encourage you to find out more regarding your eligibility for out-of-network benefits. We will provide you with the necessary paperwork to submit to your plan for reimbursement.
